What you should know about this indicator
This indicator measures the energy directly consumed by agriculture, forestry and fishing, such as fuels and electricity. It does not include energy embedded in inputs like fertilizers or machinery.

How we process data at Our World in Data
All data and visualizations on Our World in Data rely on data sourced from one or several original data providers. Preparing this original data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, as well as adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator.
At the link below you can find a detailed description of the structure of our data pipeline, including links to all the code used to prepare data across Our World in Data.
Notes on our processing step for this indicator
- We compute this indicator by dividing the energy consumed by agriculture, forestry and fishing by total final energy consumption (which excludes non-energy uses of fuels).
- For regions, we sum both flows across the countries that report agricultural energy use, and then take the ratio. Regional values are only shown for years when those countries account for at least 70% of the region's reported final energy consumption.
- We exclude a small number of country-years in the most recent years of data where agricultural energy use collapses due to incomplete source data (for example, India in 2023).
