Help us do more
To bring about a better future, we need data and research to understand the big problems the world is facing and how to make progress against them. That’s why we make all our work free and accessible for everyone.
We are a nonprofit. This means we rely on donations and grants to keep us going. Reader donations are essential to our work, providing us with the stability and independence we need, so we can focus on showing the data and evidence we think everyone needs to know.
Donating is also one way to show us that you find our work helpful and valuable. Knowing this is a huge source of inspiration for our team.
If you want to help us do more, please donate today – it will make a real difference.
Thank you,
Global Change Data Lab and the Our World in Data team
FAQs about donations
Where is my donation going?
All donations made through our website are directly received by us, Global Change Data Lab, the registered charity that produces Our World in Data. We are a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity Number 1186433), committed to producing, publishing and maintaining the Our World in Data platform. We receive 100% of your donation (subject to any transaction processing fees).
You can also choose to support us via every.org, a trusted partner that facilitates tax-deductible giving for US donors (you can read more about this below).
How is Our World in Data related to the University of Oxford?
Our World in Data is produced as a collaborative effort between researchers at the University of Oxford, and Global Change Data Lab (GCDL). We have a strong partnership in terms of research and collaboration, but the two institutions — the University of Oxford and GCDL — are entirely independent. GCDL is the registered charity that is in charge of producing, publishing and maintaining the Our World in Data platform.
Your donations to GCDL will not be shared with or subsidize the University of Oxford. Conversely, the University of Oxford does not provide funding or subsidies to GCDL. This is why your donations are vital for this project – despite our research collaboration with the University of Oxford, we rely on the generosity of our readers to sustain and grow the Our World in Data platform.
Are there any fees associated with donating?
While we strive to keep donation costs low, some small fees may apply depending on your chosen payment method. These are standard transaction fees charged by the payment providers. Whenever fees apply, they are deducted from the amount we receive.
How can I manage my monthly donation?
To change or cancel your monthly donation, please get in touch with us at donate@ourworldindata.org.
How do you process online payments on your website?
We use Stripe, which is one of the world’s largest online payment processing platforms. All donations are processed through their secure server. Neither they, nor we, will ever share any of your details with third parties.
Can I contribute through my Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?
Yes, if you have a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), you can easily direct contributions to us through every.org. They partner with Chariot, a service that verifies your DAF account details and facilitates the grant process automatically. Alternatively, if you prefer to handle the donation details yourself, every.org provides clear instructions for manual DAF contributions.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept a wide range of payment methods through payment providers such as Stripe, as well as through trusted partners like every.org. The options include popular services such as PayPal and Venmo, card payments, bank transfers, and various international payment systems (e.g. SEPA, iDEAL, etc.). It’s also possible to donate cryptocurrencies via every.org.
The options available may change from time to time for commercial or administrative reasons: for a complete and up-to-date list of available payment methods, please refer to the payment options section on our donation form.
Are donations tax-deductible in the UK?
If you are a UK taxpayer and choose to donate through our website, your donation is eligible for Gift Aid, making every £1 you give worth £1.25 to us at no additional cost to you, if you complete a Gift Aid declaration and pay sufficient tax in the UK.
Following your donation, we’ll invite you to complete a simple Gift Aid declaration. Should you not receive this invitation, or if you need any assistance, please contact us at donate@ourworldindata.org. Additionally, you will receive a donation receipt once your payment has been confirmed. Depending on your personal tax situation, you may be able to use the donation receipt for tax purposes.
Are donations tax-deductible in the US?
If you are a US taxpayer, donations can be made via our trusted partner every.org, which facilitates tax deductible giving for US donors. If you choose to support us this way, after your donation payment is confirmed you should immediately receive a tax-deductible receipt emailed to you. Your donation is made to every.org, a tax-exempt US 501(c)(3) charity that grants unrestricted funds to Our World in Data on your behalf. Although we cannot offer tax advice, we understand that this means your donation will be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by US law.
What is every.org?
Every.org is a nonprofit that simplifies charitable giving to other nonprofits. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, it allows US taxpayers to donate to a wide array of charities and provides immediate tax receipts for contributions. Every.org ensures that your donations are securely processed and efficiently reach us. Every.org do not make money from charging fees, and they do not sell anyone’s data.
Can I choose to donate money to a specific project within Our World in Data?
Your generous support will be directed towards unrestricted core funding. This flexible funding allows us to allocate resources where they are most needed, ensuring that we can continue to present the important data and evidence that inform public knowledge. Your unrestricted support will make a vital difference — providing the long-term stability and independence necessary for our most important work.
If you would like to make a larger donation (above £10,000, the limit for our online platform) for a particular project, we would be very happy to hear from you: please contact us at donate@ourworldindata.org.
