Head of Product & Design

Summary

Description: We are looking for a talented and experienced Head of Product & Design to join the leadership team at Our World in Data.

We believe that this role is the “missing pillar” in our team. You will lead and manage your own team and run the design process in the way you like. The huge impact of this role on our team and our work means that we are looking for someone experienced and very well aligned with our mission.

Contract type: Full-time, flexible hours 

Location: Remote (with office space available in Oxford)

Most of us are in the EU/African/US-East time zones and our core working hours are from noon to 5 pm London time. You can be based anywhere as long as you are regularly available during our core working hours and you have a very good Internet connection.

Deadline: We are accepting rolling applications, and will review applications as they come in.

Interview process: Upon receipt of your application we will review it and may contact you for one or more initial interviews. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to respond to a design brief and present their responses back to the leadership team. We expect the response to take 1-2 days of work, for which you will be paid.

Compensation: Compensation will be discussed early in the selection process and will depend on your profile and experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and own the product roadmap for Our World in Data, including the publication’s structure, user experience, visual branding, and possibilities for visualising data and presenting research
  • As part of the leadership team, help craft and execute our strategic goals as an organisation
  • Act as glue between teams, helping us to navigate and prioritise projects given the dependencies between teams and the different ways in which authors, data managers and engineers engage with the public
  • Hire and lead a product and design team that can take our publication to a new level
  • Improve our project management process, especially how we define, prioritise and evaluate projects that we select for development
  • Develop a process for performing and incorporating user research that enhances and lifts our work without slowing us down
  • Maintain and promote an ongoing awareness of the digital publication and data journalism landscape

Skills and experience

  • 6+ years experience in product management or design leadership in a relevant high-tech industry
  • Excellent understanding of Our World In Data’s mission
  • Excellent design intuition, the ability to quickly identify the heart of a problem and to iterate on potential solutions
  • Prior experience recruiting and managing a team
  • Strength in managing projects and overall organisational skills
  • Excellent command of English
  • Bonus: prior experience growing a small organisation
  • Bonus: prior experience in digital publishing
  • Bonus: familiarity with data-focused projects and academic work
