We built four interactive tools that give you new ways to explore key datasets

We recently built four interactive tools that give you new ways to explore our rich datasets on population projections, causes of death, migration, and the food trade. Check them out!

Our population projections tool (previewed below) lets you test how changes in fertility rates, life expectancy, and migration rates will change populations across the world in the 21st century.
Our causes of death tool lets you explore what people die from in different countries around the world, over time and broken down by age and sex.
Our migration tool lets you see where the world’s nearly 300 million international migrants were born and where they live now.
Our food trade tool lets you see how food — from almonds to soybeans to yogurt — gets traded around the world. You can also explore the data by country, seeing how different foods flow into and out of your chosen country.

You can now type to select a specific year or date in our interactive charts

Many of our interactive charts feature long time series, and it can be difficult to select the exact year or date that you want to see data for.

I recently upgraded our data visualization tool to make this much easier — now you can simply type a specific year or date in the timeline at the bottom of a chart to select it.

Just hover over the timeline selector and a text box will appear. This is currently only for desktop users.

I hope this is a helpful new feature! We love feedback — let us know what you think by filling out our feedback form.

You can now view two maps showing different years side by side

A useful way to look at change over time for an indicator is to view two maps showing different years side by side.

I recently upgraded our data visualization tool, the Grapher, to be able to do this!

To view two maps, just click on the timeline at the bottom to add a second time handle. You can then drag that handle left and right on the timeline to change the years shown.

To go back to a single map, you can either drag one handle back onto the other, or click “Reset view” at the top (only available on larger screens).

You can now copy our charts to the clipboard for easy sharing

Just click the “Share” icon in the bottom right of any chart and select “Copy chart as image”. No need to take a screenshot.

From the same menu you also have options to embed our interactive charts (including archived versions) in any website, share the link to the chart via different apps (such as mail or messages), and copy the link to your clipboard.

If instead you want to download the image file, you can do that too by clicking the “Download” icon to the left of the “Share” icon.

We design our work to have an impact beyond what our team can achieve directly. That’s why we use a permissive Creative Commons license and include these easy options to share and download our charts.

Hovering over links to charts now shows a preview

In our articles, we often link to our interactive charts so you can see the data that backs up what we say.

Now you don’t need to click the link (and get taken to a new page) to see the chart — you can simply hover over it and a preview of the chart will appear.

Look out for the little chart icon next to a link to know when you can see a preview.
