Alcohol or drug use dependence is defined by the International Classification of Diseases as the presence of three or more indicators of dependence for at least a month within the previous year. Tobacco smoking is not included. Due to the widespread under-diagnosis, these estimates use a combination of sources, including medical and national records, epidemiological data, survey data, and meta-regression models.
