  • This indicator measures how many condoms were distributed per 1,000 people over the course of a year.
  • It includes condoms distributed for free by public providers, condoms sold at subsidized prices through social marketing programs (often run by non-governmental organizations), and condoms sold commercially through the private sector.
  • The data counts condoms leaving central or regional warehouses for onward distribution, not condoms actually used.

How is this data described by its producer?

Condoms have been shown to be one of the most effective methods in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy, with effectiveness that increases with consistent and correct use. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS recommendations emphasize that condom distribution and promotion is an efficacious intervention and a critical component of combination HIV prevention.

Count of the number of male and female condoms that left the central or regional warehouses for onward distribution in the previous calendar year. Data should include condoms distributed for free (public providers), condoms sold at subsidized rates through social marketing (nongovernmental organizations as providers) and condoms sold through the commercial sector (private sector providers). There should be no double-counting of condoms in case of overlap. If condoms from public sector warehouses are given to nongovernmental organizations or community workers for distribution, condoms should be accounted for in the public sector.

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS – Global AIDS Update, Global Aids Monitoring

GAM is a standardized reporting framework coordinated by UNAIDS in which countries report HIV-related data every year. The data are used to assess progress toward global targets (currently the 95–95–95 targets and post-2025 goals).

The indicators and questions in this document are designed for use by national AIDS programmes and partners to assess the state of a country's HIV and AIDS response, and to measure progress towards achieving national HIV targets. Countries are encouraged to integrate these indicators and questions into their ongoing monitoring efforts and to report comprehensive national data through the Global AIDS Monitoring (GAM) process. In this way they will contribute to improving understanding of the global response to the HIV epidemic, including progress that has been made towards achieving the commitments and global targets set out in the new United Nations Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS: Ending Inequalities and Getting on Track to End AIDS by 2030, adopted in June 2021, and the linked Sustainable Development Goals.

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS – Global AIDS Update, Key Population Atlas

The Key Populations Atlas brings together data from diverse sources into one visual tool.

With the collaboration of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the World Health Organization, the Division of Global HIV and Tuberculosis of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNAIDS collected, collated and assessed selected indicators in a single database.

The purpose of the project is to provide more local level data for local level action for policy-makers, program directors, and community activists and advocates among others.

This Atlas extends the data dissemination and displaying capacity of AIDSinfo to better match local person, place and time data with the exigencies of an effective response to the HIV epidemic. The indicators included extend beyond traditional Global AIDS Monitoring.

Data on stigma and discrimination, particularly in the health service sector, and the legal environment were extracted and mapped, for example, to better capture some of the structural challenges in mounting effective responses for key populations communities.
