Global energy consumption by fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) versus low-carbon sources (nuclear and renewables), as measured by the substitution method. The substitution method corrects primary energy consumption for efficiency losses in the use of fossil energy sources (and is a closer, but not exact, approximation of final energy). It therefore represents a closer approximation of the quantity of energy necessary for total substitution with non-fossil sources.
